Course Overview


This course is designed for artisans who are passionate about woodworking and want to expand their skills in carpentry maintenance and repairs. Participants will learn essential techniques for maintaining and repairing furniture, doors, windows, and other wooden structures. The course will focus on hands-on skills, ensuring participants can tackle common carpentry repair challenges in both residential and commercial settings.

Introduction to Carpentry Maintenance

  • Overview of Carpentry and Woodworking Materials

Wood Damage Assessment and Preventative Maintenance

  • How to identify wood damage (cracks, warping, rot, etc.).
  • Understanding environmental factors that affect wood.
  • Tips for preventative maintenance (protecting against moisture, pests, and wear).

Tools and Safety

  • Overview of hand and power tools used in carpentry maintenance.
  • Saw types, hammers, screwdrivers, chisels, sanders, and clamps.
  • Tool care and maintenance.
  • Safety Practices in Carpentry
  • Safety gear and equipment: gloves, goggles, dust masks, etc.
  • Best practices for using power tools.
  • Workshop safety rules and protocols.

Furniture Repair and Restoration

  • Repairing Wooden Furniture
  • Fixing loose joints, broken legs, and other structural problems.
  • Reinforcing weak furniture.
  • Replacing parts (hinges, knobs, etc.)
  • Sanding, Staining, and Finishing Techniques
  • Sanding techniques for damaged surfaces.
  • Applying stain and varnish for wood restoration.
  • Polishing and protecting wood finishes.

Structural Repairs and Advanced Techniques (Repairing Doors, Windows, and Wooden Frames)

  • Fixing warping, cracks, and damaged edges.

Entry requirements

  • Minimum of a High school diploma or equivalent Basic math skills

Delivery:

Blended learning; including practical activities and case studies.

Assessment

Students will be assessed on their knowledge of the course material through a variety of methods, including theory exam and practical work-based project.
